There is no neutral approach to history. All texts and professors have a worldview so I want you to know “up front” that my approach is both biblical and “providential.” Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines “providence” as “foresight...the care and superintendence which God exercises over his creatures.” In the midst of all the nations, empires and complicated facts of history, I will emphasize that God is in control and is the first cause behind events that will move all of history toward His purpose.
“And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:26-27
There will also be a particular focus on fundamental biblical principles as they are worked out on the stage of world history. We will carefully examine national cultures to see how they reflect the internal belief systems of the people and we will get to know the fascinating individuals whom God used to accomplish His purposes, both heroes and “villains,” remembering that “the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord.” Finally, we will emphasize both the responsibility and privilege we have of participating in “His Story” as we apply the truth that we are learning to impact the culture and further God’s plan.
